Sober October Rules 2026: What the Challenge Actually Is (US Edition)
Sober October is a 31-day break from alcohol that runs from 1 October to 31 October. In the United Kingdom it is an organized fundraiser, Macmillan Cancer Support's Go Sober for October, with sign-up, sponsorship and a rulebook.
In the United States there is no official body behind it. You set the rule (no alcohol for the month), you decide your own exceptions in advance, and you keep score yourself.
Every common version of the rules allows drinks under 0.5% alcohol by volume, which is the legal definition of non-alcoholic in the US. That is the whole thing. The rest of this page is what those sentences mean in practice.
When is Sober October 2026?
Thursday 1 October to Saturday 31 October 2026. Thirty-one days, ending on Halloween, which is why the last weekend is the hard one.
Most people start at midnight on 30 September; a few start on the last Sunday of September to get the first weekend out of the way early. There is no rule about the start date because there is no rule-maker. Pick one and write it down.
Where did Sober October come from?
Macmillan Cancer Support launched Go Sober for October in the UK in 2014 as a sponsored challenge. You give up alcohol for the month, friends sponsor you, and the money funds cancer support. It has its own rules, including a "Golden Ticket" that lets a participant buy a night off for a donation.
The US version spread separately through podcasts and fitness communities from around 2017, and it borrowed the name without the charity. So when an American searches for the rules and lands on the UK charity page, they are reading the rules of a fundraiser they cannot join. This page is the US version.

Anyone in the UK |
Anyone. If you drink heavily every day, see the medical note below before you stop |
The one rule that matters is the first one, and the one decision that matters is the exceptions. Decide before 1 October whether a wedding on the 17th is an exception. If you decide on the 17th, it will be.
Does non-alcoholic beer or wine count as drinking?
No, under every common version of the rules, and here is the number behind that.
In the US a beverage labeled "non-alcoholic" must contain less than 0.5% alcohol by volume. That threshold is set out in the FDA's compliance policy on dealcoholized wine and malt beverages. Kombucha sits at the same level, a ripe banana can exceed it, and orange juice is not far behind. A drink at 0.5% cannot get an adult drunk. Your body metabolizes it faster than you can pour it.
Two caveats, stated plainly because most pages skip them. First, "alcohol-free" on a US label usually means 0.0%, so if you want none at all, look for that phrase. Sir James 101 cocktails and most Fre wines are labeled that way.
Second, if you are in recovery, the taste and ritual of a beer can be a trigger regardless of the number, and many recovery programs advise against it. That is a personal and clinical question, not a rules question, and we wrote about it at length in Is Non-Alcoholic Beer Allowed During Sober October?.
What about cooking wine, mouthwash and kombucha?
|
Item |
Does it break Sober October? |
Why |
|
Wine in a sauce that simmered 20 minutes |
No |
Most of the alcohol cooks off; nobody counts a Bolognese |
|
A splash of wine stirred in at the end |
Your call |
Very little alcohol, but you are pouring from a bottle of wine, which is the habit you are breaking |
|
Kombucha |
No |
Typically under 0.5% ABV, same as non-alcoholic beer |
|
Mouthwash, vanilla extract, tiramisu |
No |
Trace amounts; treating these as breaches is how people talk themselves out of the month |
|
A non-alcoholic wine at 0.4% ABV |
No |
It is non-alcoholic by definition; see above |
|
"Just one" at a wedding |
Yes, unless you wrote the exception down in September |
Rules decided in the moment are not rules |
What are the benefits after 31 days?
The honest answer is that the evidence comes mostly from Dry January, which is the same challenge in a colder month. Alcohol Change UK, which runs Dry January, has published research with the University of Sussex on participants: the large majority reported better sleep and more energy, most reported saving money, and six months later they were still drinking less than before the month.
Those are self-reported outcomes from people who chose to take part, so treat them as what people notice, not a clinical trial. What people notice, in order: sleep in the first week, mornings in the second, the bank balance and the waistline by the end. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has the clinical picture of what alcohol does and what stops when it stops.
Variety is what keeps people in the month. A wine drinker with a beer in the fridge has somewhere to go on the night wine is not the answer.
Medical note: If you drink heavily every day, stopping suddenly can be dangerous, and you should talk to a doctor before 1 October rather than after. This is not a page about that, and no drinks retailer should pretend it is.
How do you make Sober October stick?
Five rules that come from watching two Octobers of orders, not from a wellness blog.
-
Stock the fridge before the first. The people who quit in week three are the people who ran out of things they wanted to drink. The Sober October shopping list is priced and in stock: $89 to start, $257 for the month.
-
One pour a night, named in advance. Not "I will not drink" but "tonight is the Giesen Pinot Grigio". The 31-Day Sober October Drink Plan does exactly that.
-
Keep the ritual, change the liquid. The glass, the ice, the 6pm, the cheese board. Alcohol was never most of the ritual.
-
Plan week three now. It is the week people stop. Put a delivery on the calendar for 14 October read What Happens in Week Three when it lands.
-
Tell one person. Not the internet, one person who will ask you on the 20th how it is going.
What should you drink during Sober October?
Wine, mostly, if our customers are any guide: it was 56% of what they bought last October, and bottled spirits were 4%. The picks below are in stock in depth and under $25.
